Coddiwomple "To travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination"
Since exhibiting with Southbank Printmakers in June 2019 I have been working on a series of Coddiwomple prints. Coddiwomple describes my approach to painting, printmaking and life in general. I did not have the finished images in mind when I set out to make these prints. Every Coddiwomple print evolved through a series of decisions made along the way, and each print is unique.

Layering and juxtaposing shapes, these one-offs have been created by individually inking and printing vintage wooden letterpress type, paying attention to composition, colour and mark-making. Some developed over many months, some were shorter trips, where I reached a satisfying destination sooner.

Letters and numbers were chosen for their shapes and aesthetic qualities. Images have been made by overprinting whole or parts of the letters and numbers so that they do not function to be read as such, but as elements of an image. I am fascinated with the interaction of colour, shape and texture in a variety of compositions which are open to interpretation.

By way of contrast, alongside the Coddiwomple prints I am showing a collection of images on the theme of Trees, (side wall), where the final images were anticipated before printing. These prints were created by relief and intaglio methods from initial drawings.

From 31st March we will be open

Mon to Fri and Sunday:  11.30 to 6.30pm Saturdays: 10 to 8pm

MarPhilArt comes to SBP 15th - 28th April

MarPhilArt is the title of an exhibition at our Southbank Gallery from 15th-28th April 2019 showing the work of Marcella Worthington and Phillippa Egerton.

Marcella took a degree in Fine Art at Cardiff and went onto be involved in the fashion world, ranging from being a fashion illustrator in New York, textile designer in Manchester and make up artist in Chelsea. She has lived and exhibited in Berlin. She now concentrates on etching and regularly exhibits.

Artist’s statement

My work is characterised by delicate line drawing. My aim is for the viewer to experience a moody and atmospheric emotion.

I produce etchings from my watercolours of life drawings, faces and figures which I then combine as Chin Collee etchings.

Phillippa did a History degree at Oxford before going into mural design and then doing a printmaking MA at Wimbledon. She does painting as well as printmaking and has won awards for her printmaking including a gold medal from the Printmakers Council and regularly exhibits in London. She has two grandchildren.

Artist’s statement

My work is bold and colourful and I like to build up complex images using a combination of drawings, photos, watercolours and created textures that I put together on the computer before screen printing. The interaction between the computer and traditional printmaking has always fascinated me.  I’m inspired by colour, light, movement and children’s toys which has led to a series of darkly comic images.

A Day out at the Garden Museum

If you are wondering what to do this Sunday what about a visit to the Garden Museum?  They are holding their annual Spring Plants and Garden Fair from 10.30 to 17.00 and we have a stall manned by our own Kit Boyd, Theresa Pateman and Hil Scott.

The theme of the stall unsurprisingly is all things horticultural and here you have a chance to buy an original Kit Boyd 'Green Man' as a print.......

 ....or as a card.....

Kit is also bringing along his crazy wood engraving (below)

His lush green 'Eden'

and many more.......

Barbara Jackson's images will also be on sale.  Her strangely beautiful 'Winter Tree' may not be seasonal but is nevertheless desirable!

And if, when wandering in the 17th century styled knot garden, you want something to remind you of the outing, how about her enchanting image below?

You might like Julie Sullock's evocative images.  Particularly.....

Prussian Tree

Autumn Tree

Richmond Park
Theresa Pateman is bringing some of her atmospheric
depictions of the Welsh countryside to the fair. These are relatively new works and have not yet been seen widely.  Now's your chance to own a little bit of Cymru!
Ice White

Road to Littlehaven

The Wedding Guest

To the Sea

There will be much much more to see and buy.  Read all about it here and enjoy!
