Sandra Haney 10th-23rd June 2019 with Southbank Printmakers

Currently living in the North East and frequently inspired by her surroundings at home and while travelling, many of Sandra's prints contain gestural freedom that gives each piece its uniqueness.

A  featured artist on both Saatchi.com and Artfinder, Sandra's work sells internationally. Having lived and studied in London in the 80's and 90's, now a member of  Northern Print, Sandra creates unique printed images often employing a range of processes.

Also a painter, Sandra aims for each print to have freshness and individuality. The main constants of layering, mark-making and bold composition are brought to the prints which are often abstract.
For Sandra, printmaking is a way to replicate marks that can be present in several works, while  each piece is as individual as a painting. Fascinated by the various processes and versatility that printmaking offers, allowing for both immediacy of the hand and carefully planned processes, Sandra likes to incorporate diverse techniques to increase the creative challenge and allow for new possibilities to emerge.  This approach allows for an element of spontaneity in her printmaking.

Sandra's printmaking was selected from among 22 artists to front an Arts Council England funded exhibition in Newcastle upon Tyne 2017. 'Art History', exhibited here, was one of the works produced for that exhibition.

This is the first time these prints have been exhibited in London and while the majority of them are one-offs, some etchings, linocuts, woodcuts and engravings from small limited editions have been included.

MarPhilArt comes to SBP 15th - 28th April

MarPhilArt is the title of an exhibition at our Southbank Gallery from 15th-28th April 2019 showing the work of Marcella Worthington and Phillippa Egerton.

Marcella took a degree in Fine Art at Cardiff and went onto be involved in the fashion world, ranging from being a fashion illustrator in New York, textile designer in Manchester and make up artist in Chelsea. She has lived and exhibited in Berlin. She now concentrates on etching and regularly exhibits.

Artist’s statement

My work is characterised by delicate line drawing. My aim is for the viewer to experience a moody and atmospheric emotion.

I produce etchings from my watercolours of life drawings, faces and figures which I then combine as Chin Collee etchings.

Phillippa did a History degree at Oxford before going into mural design and then doing a printmaking MA at Wimbledon. She does painting as well as printmaking and has won awards for her printmaking including a gold medal from the Printmakers Council and regularly exhibits in London. She has two grandchildren.

Artist’s statement

My work is bold and colourful and I like to build up complex images using a combination of drawings, photos, watercolours and created textures that I put together on the computer before screen printing. The interaction between the computer and traditional printmaking has always fascinated me.  I’m inspired by colour, light, movement and children’s toys which has led to a series of darkly comic images.

'Colour Matters' by Elaine Coles at Southbank Printmakers

We are excited and delighted to be hosting Elaine Coles's vibrant and dynamic work in the gallery from 2nd May for two weeks.

Elaine is one of those multi-talented individuals who can work in different mediums, her favourites being pottery and printmaking.  To see her pottery, you may have to seek her out in her studio in Chobham High Street, Woking, or catch her at one of the many craft fairs she attends.  You can also look on her website and discover more about her and her influences........

.......Meanwhile, back at Southbank Printmakers, Elaine will be showing gems such as this

Red Sky at Night

and this

Both beautiful images vividly inspired by her time in Botswana

Elaine's departure into printmaking is recent and she is currently experimenting with both traditional and digital printmaking techniques.  This exhibition is typical of her current work. Using the landscape to inspire her, she creates traditional monoprints using layers of colour and texture.  She then photographs the print and transfers it on to the computer and using Photoshop she adds more layers of texture and colour which she blends and manipulates until the final result is achieved. She prints this onto fine art paper.  Elaine sometimes prints on top of the print to create an even more original piece of art.
The prints are limited to editions of 5

The results of this innovative printmaking endeavour are, as you can see, quite stunning and even more so in the original.  So we hope you will mark this rather special exhibition on your calendar and join us in the gallery between the hours of 11.30 - 18.30, Sunday to Friday and 11.30 to 20.00 on Saturday.

The Light Years - 15 Years of Southbank Printmakers

From 17th to 29th November Southbank Printmakers are being hosted by the prestigious Lightbox Gallery where we will be exhibiting a selection of work, some of which will be receiving its first outing!

The following printmakers have work in this exciting show:

Mary Cossey
Carmen Gracia
Jenny Ronay
Maureen Sweeney

'Meet the Artists' on Sunday 22nd November where refreshments will be served......a date for your diary!

This is what they are saying about us....

'Southbank Printmakers Gallery in Gabriels Wharf SE1, is celebrating its 15th Anniversary this year.

Southbank Printmakers are a co-operative of 37 artist printmakers founded in 2000 by artist and Gallery Manager, Jenny Ronay, to showcase the best in London based contemporary printmaking.
As a practicing printmaker herself, Jenny had experienced and liked the idea of the shared responsibilities and benefits of a co-operative.  She formed a steering committee with Theresa Pateman and other members, and invited a diverse selection of talented artists to join.

Many members, past and present, are internationally renowned, some are members of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers (ex-member Mychael Barratt is now President), and many show regularly in other venues including The Royal Academy, Bankside and the Mall Galleries.
Some members also teach printmaking and are themselves former students of the Royal College and the Royal Academy schools.
Chris Salmon and former member Nana Shiomi have appeared on printmaking documentaries on television.

The Gallery is in a thriving riverside location surrounded by restaurants and designer shops.  During the past fifteen years it has moved to bigger premises and held many successful outside exhibitions, including two at the Oxo Tower London, and one in Germany.

The Gallery is open almost every day throughout the year where the full extent of the wide range of images and techniques can be seen.
It is staffed by members who can answer questions and explain printmaking methods.'

We would love to see you! The Lightbox is open from 10.00 to 17.00 Tuesday to Saturday and from 11.00 to 17.00 on Sundays

Southbank printmakers have popped-up in Brick Lane

Six of us have had a lovely time setting up shop in Sclater Street E1.  The plan is to hang out over the weekend and educate the crowds attending Brick Lane market in the delights of printmaking....i.e. we hope they will come inside and buy what they see!

We have an amazing premises which we have decorated gorgeously with bunting. Hil Scott, Theresa Pateman, Susan Short and Jane Stothert have hung the shop with framed prints and it all looks excellent! You can see their work and also Diana Croft's and yours truly. It's a shame it has to come down on Sunday but all the more reason to bring your friends for a look.

We have reasonably priced prints, cards and acetates and just over the cobbles is the lovely Amaya who will serve you with iced coffee and moist chocolate buns to die for.

We would love to see you!

Eight more shopping days to go

Don't forget Mother's Day - Sunday 15th

Today I went out without a coat!  Admittedly I had three other layers about me, but generally I felt a considerable balminess that was most welcome and timely - Spring being on the way means that Mother's Day is just around the corner - and at Southbank Printmakers we have the very thing for mothers and mother's mothers and their mothers.
Sally Cutler 'The Baby in the Middle'

Sally Cutler 'The Mother'

Flowers are the order of the day and we have Ann Burnham's delightful trio......

Hil Scott has produced these charming images....
Japanese Anemone

Big White Daisies

All this and more.....'more' being Jenny Ronay's sensitively entitled 'Tea and Sympathy'

So when you're wandering and wondering, wander in to our Gallery and we will show you much more in the way of delights.  We are open 7 days a week from Mon - Fri and Sunday 11.30 to 5pm and sometimes longer as the evenings get lighter.  Saturdays we are here from 10am to 7 pm.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Unsurprisingly the Gallery is closed today and tomorrow (Boxing Day) but we open our doors again on Saturday at 10am when Phillip Solly will be sitting.......Here is one of his meticulously observed etchings - 'After the Downpour'
In the afternoon you can meet Jennifer Jokhoo.  Jennifer works in lino cut and etching and is best known for her architectural images, with particular reference to the regeneration of London Bridge.  She has also produced a number of images of the Shard in various stages of construction, documenting its progression and focusing on its changing layers and shapes.
