'Come live with me and be my love.....'

Only 5 days to go to that special day and we have some amazing gifts for your loved ones.....Whether it's hearts and flowers you are looking for or something more eclectic we have a proliferating collection of beautiful images.

'Love on the Thames' - Theresa Pateman

Earth has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
Ann Burnham's beautiful tulips
And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant posies;
A cap of flowers and a kirtle
Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle.

'Hot Daffs' - Lucie Green

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

'Flying Kisses' - Hill Scott

What is love? 'Tis not hereafter,
Present mirth hath present laughter,
What's to come is still unsure.
In delay there lies no plenty,
So come kiss me sweet and twenty,
Youth's a stuff will not endure.

'Tryst' - Barbara Jackson

Alas and is there no remedy ?
But have I thus lost it wilfully ?
I wis it was a thing all too dear
To be bestowed, and wist not where :
It was mine heart, I pray you heartily
Help me to seek.
'He Loves Me' Jane Daniell

Southbank Printmakers at the Royal Academy

We are delighted that five of our members have work in the RA Summer Exhibition. They are Mary Cossey, Jim Anderson, Martin Langford, Theresa Pateman and Lucie Green

A little foretaste to inspire you to visit this fantastic exhibition of contemporary and emerging artists!

Let me begin with something truly 'hands on'....images by Theresa from her series entitled 'Sense & Sensibilia'  This series looks at the five senses that we all know about and queries the likelihood of misconception and also questions the validity of our 'sixth sense'  Well my sixth sense is telling me that Theresa can look forward to many red dots on her exquisitely rendered aquatints - see below:

Ouch

There, There

Hands are also a theme in Jim's 'Shadow Play'  A rather amazing and vibrant lino-cut.  Jim has drawn upon the games we all played as children - creating monsters, birds and butterflies magically with clever contortions of our fingers and thumbs.

Lucie Green's highly skilled woodcut of a potter in Nepal just takes my breath away!

As I always say, these jpegs are all very well, but really only convey the image.  For the whole picture (pardon the pun) you have to see the actual print and if you can't make the RA you would be very welcome at our gallery

See Laura Weston's fabulous work at Southbank Printmakers from Sunday 18th May

We are delighted to be hosting an exciting selection of work by Laura Weston.

From this Sunday you can see her relief and intaglio prints at our gallery until 1st June.

Laura's work provides a vibrant escapism into an imaginary world populated by trees, foxes, birds, domestic pets - the flora & fauna of a 1920’s garden suburb.  It features sequence and pattern and refers back to years working in animation as a producer and now University Lecturer in Animation.   Repeating themes and motifs echo the influence of cherished childhood toys and the block printed wallpaper's ample books, which she admired in the late 1960’s as a small child in her father’s painting & decorating shop.

"Blackbirch"

"Festival Bunting"

"Platypus"

In 2012 she was awarded the Artichoke Studio Prize - 8th British International Mini Print for “Seven Birds”
Laura was first inspired to try printmaking by Don Bessant & Jim Chappin during a Fine Art Degree at Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1984-1987.  Days spent in their buzzing print room proved the perfect contrast  to the solitude of animation, her first subject.  After a career in animation she began printmaking again in 2009 on her kitchen table using water based inks. She now prints at home, and at the Bluecoat Print Studio & Artichoke, Brixton.
"Sitting Fox"
Laura regularly exhibits her work in Cornwall, Wirral and Shrewsbury. You can follow her printmaking antics on Twitter @laurawestonart or web: laurawestonart.com
You will like what you see!  We are open from Mon to Fri and Sunday: 11.30 – 6.30pm
Saturdays 10.00 – 8.00pm.

Happy to Host Hampstead Printmakers!

We are lucky to be hosting some exquisite work from our North London friends, the Hampstead Printmakers.  You will be able to see their work from Monday 5th May to Sunday 18th May so if you are at a loose end during the upcoming long weekend why not come and visit.  We are open from 11.30 to 6.30pm Sunday to Friday and from 10am to 8pm on Saturday.

Emilie Butler has produced this unusual image which is slightly dark and captures the attention.  The drama of the woman prostrate on the finely wrought pebbles.  Is she grieving?  How did she arrive there? What is happening.  Regardless of the questions it raises - it is a very succinct piece of work.
No questions to ask Angela Bloomberg about her elegant 'Water Lily'! This is a simple and delightful rendering as you can see.  The colours of the original are strong and resonant.  This is one that has to be seen to be fully appreciated.  The thumbnail does not do it justice.

Sally Platt's 'Blue Planet' embodies all the mystery and movement occurring 'out there'....If, like me, you find contemplating the infinite disturbing, you can focus instead on this stunning image which incorporates many processes to achieve that molten explosive feel.

Rebecca Denton's images are, again, best seen in the flesh.  The humourous unique take on the world of dog walking can be seen below.  Her originality and quirky work will make you smile!

Not to be missed!  So do drop in to the gallery to see these and much much more.

Unique Utensils by Jacki Baxter

There is an element of surprise that Jacki brings to her work which is not an accident.  She takes an everyday object from your kitchen and it becomes a piece of art.  How clever is that!

I particularly like 'Blue Gold Jug' below where the flecks of gold elevate the image and somehow conveys to me the timelessness of the blue jug.  A shape that has been with us throughout man's history in the form of ewers, pitchers, flask and flagons and no doubt, because of its convenient shape will be with us for posterity.

Jacki chooses her subjects from the kitchens of family and friends.  Her intention is to give the 'ordinary' centre stage.  Inviting you to interpret it however you choose..  The image below (Golden Urn)  is an example of this.  The flourish alongside the urn takes it out of the kitchen and places it in my imagination.  How do you see it?  Let me know!

Jacki's 'Jug and Two Spoons' is aptly named and like her other images is strongly influenced by her career as a food stylist. The black and white draws my attention the shape of the everyday objects which she has interpreted using a linocut technique.

I love this one!  'On the Shelf' as it is humourously named!  This is a screenprint and the rendering of the glass is exquisite.

The extraordinary angles of the woodcut 'Under the Table' is what excites me about this one, with its glimpse of a perfectly rendered spoon nestling, as per the title.  Another surprise from Jacki!

For more of Jacki's work and an excellent choice of prints from a variety of artists do visit us at the Southbank Printmakers
